Training in martial arts is brilliant for all children but choosing the right club and the right art can be confusing with so many options available.
Jiu Jitsu is unique in its approach to self defence as it is all based on leverage over strength and size, this means that a much smaller practitioner can truly defend against a larger opponent. Also because it is grappling based it provides a realistic approach to bullying as even if a young practitioner did become a proficient striker in another art they know full well that they would be making a big and dangerous mistake to strike another child. Whereas with their Jiu Jitsu knowledge they will be able to successfully control a situation in a safe and considered manner using only the force required.

Jiu Jitsu is also specifically great for developing children’s ability to problem solve and persist with challenges. This is because when students are rolling (sparring) it is highly technical and often likened to chess. The student with the best technical application of knowledge will prevail giving the other student the opportunity to reflect, adapt and try again. This ability can then be repeated when facing day to day challenges in life.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has so many other wonderful benefits it would be impossible to list them all but through your child’s training we are excited at how you will see them growing and progressing both inside and outside of the training room.

Do you take examinations to receive belts?
No, in Jiu Jitsu progress is tracked within classes and once a student has completed the criteria for their next belt they will be presented it either at a class, seminar, atop a competition podium or wherever will mark the occasion best.
Do you have to pay for your belt promotion?
No
What is the grading criteria?
Promotions have a minimum age and guidelines for the amount of lessons to be attended. Beyond this the instructor will assist students from class to class ensuring their technical and sparring ability progress consistently to ensure a smooth progression. Students cannot simply get a belt by performing a set of movements.
Is Jiu Jitsu Safe?
Jiu Jitsu, like all contact sports, carries inherent risks but of course every effort is made to minimise these risks. However, if you have a pre-existing medical condition you should inform the instructor and consult your physician before commencing training.
Should I purchase any extra protective gear?
The only specific protective equipment advisable is a gum shield and/or ear guard. For more advice on these please speak to your instructor.
Do you have kids and adults in the same class?
No, although the movements remain very similar for juniors and adults the way we teach the material changes considerably with the age of the students. We do however hold family events where families can enjoy the club together.
